Danish for ‘chapel in the forest’, Skovkapel at Vestre Kirkegård is a spiritual sequence for visitors of any religions or faiths. While it is equipped to host funerals and religious services, its principal use is as a space for reflection — an intentional lack of function. In a world composed entirely of programs, Skovkapel attempts to offer the alternative.
Cascading light carves geometric volumes out of the ground, guiding movement through moments of compression and release. The extruded forms of Skovkapel reach toward the sky to catch the attention of runners, cyclists, and commuters on the neighboring metro line. The contrasting intentions of interior and exterior are mediated through the project’s poche to deliver a unified effect: a break from the everyday.
